AM1090 is holding their 4th Annual Town Hall Forum at the Showare Center in Kent on August 8th, in just under a week, and the 33rd Dems are sponsors! Entitled “Embracing Change: Moving Forward As The Majority”, the event will bring five popular nationally syndicated progressive talk radio hosts together on one stage to discuss the major political and public policy issues facing our country and what we as citizens can do to put our nation on a path toward progress and prosperity. This year??‚¬?„¢s lineup includes Stephanie Miller, Thom Hartmann, Bill Press, Mike Malloy, Ron Reagan and moderator David Postman.

First, AM1090 is offering members of the 33rd District a special discount to the event! This is going to be a great event, so don’t miss out!

Ultra-conservatives, those “teabaggers”, are ramping up their opposition to universal and single-payer health care through shutting down legitimate debate with shout-downs. Their tactic is to show up in groups at town hall meetings and such, distribute around the room, and shout and make such a ruckus that good debate can’t occur. Debate is how we as a democratic nation make decisions. So you can see what kind of people they are.

The next series of meetings that will be occurring that they may show up at will be two events with US Congressman Adam Smith. Put on your Democratic hard hate, grab your universal health care debate talking points, and show them how Democrats make change!

The Annual 33rd LD picnic is on, and you are invited! This year we’ll be picnicing together with our good friends from the 34th and 11th LDs at Crystal Springs in Tukwila. All you need to do is bring yourself and a healthy appetite for good food and great conversation.

July 20th, our general meeting, is also an endorsement meeting. Please review the 2009 Elections page for more information on the endorsement process and which candidates have contacted us so far for endorsement. We hope to see you on Monday!

The Burien Parade on July 4th was a great success! We’ll get some pictures up soon from that event. Now that we are all rested up, let’s renew our enthusiasm and head down to Kent to participate in Cornucopia Days. You have several opportunities to show your Democratic spirit and promote our year-round mission.

First, you can sign up to help staff the District’s booth at the Street Fair. We are sharing the booth with the 47th district. Let’s show the 47th our spirit! The purpose of the booth is to promote Democratic candidates and issues. The booth is #32; located on the north side of Meeker Street between Second and Fourth Avenues. Closest parking is located on the north side of Smith Street between Fourth and Sixth Avenues. Last year, I parked at Kent Commons, entering the lot from James street between 4th and 6th Avenues.

Please let me know what shifts you want to cover, so I can make sure we have at least one person for each shift.

And, of course, the Cornucopia Days Parade on Sunday, July 12 starts at 2:00 pm; we will be gathering with Karen and Dave at 5th and Gowe around 1:00 pm. Several candidates will be marching with us (such as Kent City Council candidate Dennis Higgins, Port Commissioner Candidate Max Vekich, and King County Executive candidate Dow Constantine). The theme this year is “Have a Rockin’ Good Time in 2009″, so let’s go to Kent and Rock!!

Parking: There are several facilities (schools, churches, etc) around the staging area that have parking lots that may be available for parade goers and marchers, as well as limited on-street parking. Last year, I parked at the end of the route at Kent Commons (enter from James between 4th and 6th), which meant walking the route twice, but you’ll do that anyway; either before or after the Parade. There is also parking on the north side of Smith St between 4th and 6th Avenues that is identified as festival parking.

If you are unfamiliar with Kent, their website kcdays.com has great maps for each event, that will help you navigate the town amid the festival street closures.

I have T-shirts and hats for those who want them, as well as issue-specific parade signs identifying the 33rd. I can bring hats and shirts to the booth beforehand, to the parade, or make arrangements to meet you someplace so you can have them for your shift at the booth or marching in the parade. Please let me know what you prefer. I have some kid sizes as well.

Sooo, put on your comfortable shoes and come on down to Kent for a Rockin’ Good Time!

Hey all you 33rd Dems, let’s show our spirit at the Burien 4th of July Parade this Saturday! While 2009 is not a huge election year, we still have important races and issues that need our support and enthusiasm; County Executive, County Assessor, Port Commission, local races, as well as critical issues facing our state and nation; like Health Care, Education, the Environment, etc.

Sooo, on Saturday, July 4th, we will be lining up with the 34th and 11th Dems, Senator Keiser, Reps Upthegrove and Orwall, and our endorsed candidates to celebrate this great country.

So, meet up with us on 8th Ave SW between 149th and 151st (just east of Ambaum Blvd) starting at 2:30 pm. The parade begins at 3:30, follows a circuit route and ends up back about where we will be parked. Immediately after the parade, Dave Upthegrove’s family is graciously hosting their annual barbeque at their family home on Lake Burien (1808 SW 156th) where the beer and soda will be icy, and the hamburgers and veggie burgers hot and juicy. This is always a fun time to meet and greet fellow dems, candidates, and our electeds.

Now, for the details: Parking is available at the Municipal lot at 634 SW 151st, as well as the mish-mash of lots that serve several small business buildings. Please be considerate and don’t park immediately adjacent to a business that is open that day.

I will have 33rd t-shirts, hats, and signs supporting various issues. Please plan to wear the shirts and hats at future events — and I will bring the signs back to those future events, as well. You are also welcome to carry signs for your favorite candidate (provided by said candidate!).

Let’s show the City of Burien and our fellow Dems what an enthusiastic crowd we can be. So, suit up and show up before the fireworks blow up!!

We expect action from our representatives because a watered down health care plan that fails to include single payer or at a minimum a very robust public option (see the petition for details) is not acceptable. The time to act is now and you can help make real reform for all Americans a reality.

Members of the Executive Board will meet at the home of chair Omaha Sternberg (address below) and call through the membership list. Our goal is to remind those who haven’t renewed yet of the benefits of continued membership in the 33rd LD Democrats, to gather volunteers for our list of summer events, and to further the survey we did earlier this year with the remaining membership.

The June meeting just concluded. The following candidates were endorsed for the following positions. A passing vote required 2/3 of the members present.

The 33rd would like to thank all candidates for spending the time to speak to our members and go through the interview process. We would also like to thank all members who attended and took the time on such a beautiful day to determine which candidates the 33rd LD put their endorsement to.

June will be an endorsement meeting. We will be considering the endorsement of candidates for King County Executive, King County Council, King County Assessor, and King County Port Commissioner. We invite all candidates for these positions to attend during the first hour of the meeting (7 to 8 pm) where they will be allowed a 2 minute speech to the membership.

The endorsement committee will create their recommendations through a combination of reviewing King County Democrat questionnaires filled out by candidates and brief interviews held in cases where the committee feels that is necessary. The membership will vote on endorsements in the second hour.

All candidates who wish to participate are invited to contact the 33rd Democrats at chair@33rddistrictdemocrats.org.
